news of the week

Well.
I took a tour of the Parent Participation Preschool in town, cause its cheap and was/is gonna put Bayvin in it. Because parents participation and are like teachers, I had to get a TB skin test taken.

It is positive. I have to get a chest x-ray done on monday and Grif and Bayvin both have to be tested. If its inactive I have to take a drug for the next 6 months, I don't seem to have any symptoms so I don't think it could be active, so we'll just wait to see what the x-ray says.

Yikes! Is it possible for you to one day get it, like if your immune system is down?

Erin Priest 5:22 PM

5% of people can get active TB within 2 years, and 5% within their life. So really slim chance, plus its only a problem if not treated. I think the meds I'd be on should make it not possible for it to be active, but dunno everything yet. Gotta wait til the chest xray results.

Have you talked to mom? I think she always test positive for TB, but has never had a positive chest xray - so it could be a familial thing.

none 4:57 PM

Well, my opinion is you should go get the meds for this and get treatment. You can read about latent tb here
http://www.cdc.gov/nchstp/tb/faqs/qa_latenttbinf.htm

The reason is that even though you aren't in a high risk group right now, one day you will be...as you get older, or if you get pregnant again and your immune system drops. In fact, any time you have a lowered immune system you have a risk at getting active tb. You can take the meds now and will never have active tb.

Another thing is it is easier to treat it now, while there is just a small amount in your body, than if you do get an active case of it.

Just something to think about.

Hi, I am also a mom with a Postive TB. I was scared for some reason and I took medicine but the thing in my mind was " what will other people think of me" Will my children have this. I've done the chest xray and it was fine and just feel bum that I would have it. How are you doing now?

Anonymous 10:19 AM

Damn this sucks, I just had a TB test for the Rehab facility I got a job in and I'm going to get it read today, but my arm looks exactly like yours.....now I'm worried!!

Tara 9:54 PM

Great. Mine looks exactly like that too. Lovely. Finally got a good job.

Anonymous 3:51 PM

question: if you have a positive reading of a TB test and you work in a nursing home, do you loose your job or can you continue working>

Anonymous 9:15 PM

oh my that's what mine looks like i'm getting it read on saturday i'm super scared! ehhhckkkk. yeah do you know if you have a positive tb test can you still work in a hospital setting? oh gollyyyy. hope the chest xray goes well and it's clear! i'll say a prayer!

Erin Priest 9:21 PM

i have no idea if you can still work in a hospital. I went through the treatment and have clear chest xrays, so I've never been worried about it. If you go through the medication and chest xrays are clear, its not active, I wouldn't see why you couldn't.

i dont think this is a positive test. +PPD for TB is measured in "induration" or raised reaction over the skin and with you not having risks factors (I'm assuming you're not an IV drug user, have HIV, or been to Haiti lately), it would need to be raised at least 15mm above plane of the skin. The diameter around the test, which you have, should not be considered. Maybe the medical professionals near you need a refresher in med education. -Dr. W

Anonymous 11:21 PM

Right on Dr. W This not positive!

Erin Priest 8:02 AM

Unfortunately you're wrong Dr W, it is a positive, have you measured a quarter? It may not look it, but it was as big as the quarter Which would make it longer than 15mm. And it was completely raised. Don't go making diagnosis over a picture, when a licensed professional made it very clear it was positive.
My xray was negative, but I still went through the 6 month treatment.

Anonymous 6:41 PM

From the pic it does not look raised and I would have to see it either with a clearer pic or in person. But if I was just looking at this pic I can understand why one of the previous guys commented saying it was negative....the pic does not appear to show a raised wheel shape nor does the reaction appear to have clearly defined proportions, but appears just as a red allergic reation to the test...remember, the redness of the test site is not a positive test. So after all this I just want to say that I can understand why it would appear from this pic to be a negative test...so I think you should apologize to the guy who said it was negative...just a thought...latar dudes.

Anonymous 7:15 AM

I was going to say that it looked negative. I see no raising, and it doesn't "look" hard (I know, not very medical, but you don't measure the redness). Too many health care professionals don't know how to read TB tests and scare the shit out of people. A positive would be raised and hard at the site, not simply red.

Anonymous 5:23 PM

i just got my test done its very red and was not the frist time i got it done. its also raised a bit but not hard. should i be worried?

Anonymous 11:04 AM

Someone on here said taking the drugs for latent tb prevents active tb later in life. It reduces your chances, but it does not guarantee you won't get it. Active tb is still likely. Plus, the drugs are very toxic to the liver and could cause hepatitis. You can find this information out online too.

My doctor informed me about the the adverse effects of the drugs (I think it was izonid) and wouldn't let me take them because my liver values were slightly high. I refuse to ever take them unless I have active tb. A lot of sites say that doctors sometimes decide taking the preventitive medicine is not worth it, considering it will likely not eliminate all of the bacteria in the body and can produce severe health effects. Some sites will not provide a whole picture of this problem because they may profit from treatment or drug sales, or because they don't have latent tb and fear it.

Eloise 6:43 AM

Ok know I think mine is positive as well...and its very itchy but theres another problem....Im 5 months pregnant....=.{ What do i do.....

Anonymous 11:51 AM

I have worked in the health care field in both hospital and nursing home. If the skin test is possitive but the chest xray shows that the TB is NOT active you can continue to work as long as you remain symptom free.

To all you people...my dad just tested positive for TB and IT SUCKS. Now all my family and I will test for it too. I hope things work out fine and he can heal properly. Hope that for you too.

May I just say that even if the area was "completely raised" the word "completely" does not constitute a 15 mm measurement. If you notice in Dr.W's comment he stated the area must be RAISED 15 mm off the plane of the skin. I believe you miss read Dr.W's comment and I too agree that the medical professionals in your area, or at least the one that read your TB test, needs a refresher course on med. education. I also agree that you owe him an apology. Just a thought...

candice 1:26 AM

I actually had my ppd read today. The red area is bigger than yours and mine is raised. The nurse said it was negative but went to get a doctor for a second opinion and he also said negative. Some people's bodies react to what is in the shot, i.e. having redness/swelling with other shots like a booster. The doctor informed me that qualified ppd readers are easily able to tell. From sight your arm looks like peanuts compared to mine. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Anonymous 4:27 PM

I work in a Resident Home. I have been there two years now. I have taken the test once a year and both times my injection site is red but negative. Just because the injection site is red does not mean it is positive. Stop scaring yourself over what you read on the internet. Remember even if there is a raise in the skin it has to be at least 15mm.

Anonymous 5:14 AM

wht should i do mines is red,she gave the shot n i started to bleed for a few sec, did she do it right.i have a little bump should i be worry....

Anonymous 11:39 AM

i got my tb skin test and my son yesterday. when i check the site of injection today its red and when i check my son's arm,no redness.i dont know what this mean but im scared or worried.and my husband say, there's nothing to be worry because the reason it get red because im carrying my son using my arm with the site of injection,it could be rub while im carrying my son.but im still worried..

Anonymous 8:02 PM

I just had a PPD TB skn test and had a raised red reaction to it. It is the diameter of a quarter and rough in texture. My Doctor told me that it is an allergic reaction to PPD serum and is not a positive test. I was not sent for a chest xray but was told because had suffered from a serious viral infection some years ago and my immune system was comprised that it was not uncommon to have an allergic reaction. I was advised not to have the ski test again but if necessary to be tested by chest xray in the future. I was very concerned but have had my questions answered.

Anonymous 4:17 PM

ohhh
I just had mine read today and it is +PPD. They measured the induration and it was 25mm x 23mm. I went for an x ray and am awaiting the results... :)

Anonymous 5:08 PM
